With fingers at the buzzers (or rather IPADs!), 6 students (years 7-11) from each school represented their school in answering general knowledge questions on subjects as diverse as Harry Potter to quantum physics! The Tuxford Academy team were made up of students from Inter-college quiz winners - Oak College. The Oak team won the inter-college quiz on 21st March, beating the three other Tuxford colleges in a battle for the inter-college cup. The Oak players were then put forward to the challenge of battling against the other three DALP schools for the quiz final.

An exciting series of six games were played by all four teams. East Leake Academy were leaders from the start with a final clear win of 295 points, beating the other three DALP schools and making them DALP Quiz Champions’ 2013. Chris Pickering DALP Principal thanked all teams and their supporters for attending the quiz and finally presented the victorious East Leake team with a trophy. All students that took part in the quiz will receive a DALP quiz certificate.
‘It was an exciting quiz, said Mr Baker, the question master, all teams performed extremely well. The level of Maths ability and lightening responses in particular were impressive for all schools.’ The DALP quiz final, this year held at Retford Oaks, was the first of its kind for DALP, who are keen to run a programme of events throughout the year which bring together the four schools.

Tuxford's U18s Rugby Team Create History

TUXFORD’S U18s RUGBY TEAM CREATE HISTORY

Tuxford Academy’s U18 Rugby team have made history by becoming county champions for the first time in school history.

The team, led by Captain Will Taylor, were crowned county championships after triumphing 15-12 in a nail-biting final against Stapleford’s George Spencer Academy at Paviors RFC. “It was a very scrappy game- neither side dominated until our first try just before half time,” said Phil Marshall, coach.

“We were camped on our own try-line for the last few minutes of the half, but defended the pressure well.” Three unconverted tries from scrum-half Will Machin, number 8 Daniel Price and flanker Richard Price secured the prestigious Notts Schools County Cup for Tuxford Academy!

Indeed, the talented squad also saw them reach the second round of the prestigious ‘Daily Mail Schools Cup’ in their first appearance in the competition, beating Lincoln Minster in the first round. ‘I’m delighted for the lads – in the past they have been knocked out of the semis – they’ve always been the nearly men. To win in their final year is a credit to them. They’ve stuck at it and encouraged other boys to get involved,’ Phil Marshall.

Winning the cup is a fantastic achievement for the team who have playing together as a team since year 7. Now with the majority in their last year at school and winning the cup in their last match together for the school, what a brilliant send off for the boys. We hope they continue playing and enjoy further sporting successes in the future.

Simon Weston visits Tuxford Academy

Children from all the feeder schools were invited to submit artwork on an animal based theme. The artwork was then put into age based categories and judged by Sally and her son in their gallery. Prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and x2 runners-up for each age category – KS1, KS2 and KS3.

‘The volume of artwork submitted was astounding said Nicola Manning, Extended Services Co-ordinator, we were really impressed with the children’s interest in the competition.’ Geoff Lloyd, Head Teacher at Tuxford Academy presented a certificate and prize to each child.

The prize from Tuxford Academy was an A3 drawing pad and art pencils. The Sally Mitchell Gallery also very generously framed each of the children’s artwork along with presenting the children with a box of chocolates. ‘It was lovely to see all the children’s artwork. We were both really impressed and due to the high standard of entries it was difficult to narrow them down to the final winners ‘said Sally Mitchell.

Over 40 parents/Carers attended the event and were delighted to see their children’s artwork displayed professionally in the new gallery. ‘It’s a beautiful venue and a fantastic event, one parent said. My daughter (age 10) has always loved drawing and is really looking forward to improving her artwork whilst at Tuxford Academy.

The community art competition partnership is a first for Tuxford Academy and Sally Mitchell. School would like to thank Sally Mitchell and her colleagues again for being involved and hosting the event. We hope to repeat the competition in 2014.
