A BRIEF REVIEW BY JO HEATHCOTE
"I expected to read the section on my era (late 50's and early 60's) and then put the book down, but instead I found myself wanting to keep going to the end".
Peter Stead, Editor of Egmanton Villager newsletter (and former student).
This is just one of many positive remarks made about 'On Task, On Target' - the story of Tuxford School's first fifty years. Researched and written by school archivist Terry White, the book traces the origins of the school, discusses the merits of comprehensive as opposed to selective education, reveals the planned extension to the original building that was never built and traces the introduction of the sixth form. The story is often told in the words of past and present staff, past students or press reports. It is fully illustrated throughout, making good use of a number of previously unseen photographs that were loaned or donated for the purpose.
The book provides a much more detailed account. The county architect won a RIBA award "the best building in the East Midlands constructed in the last three years" for his Tuxford School design. The building became the model for many other schools throughout the country and visitors from all over the world came to view it. The school was also the first in the county to keep cows.
Second headteacher Keith Atkinson, was awarded an MBE on his retirement for his services to rowing and to education. The book reveals his charismatic personality and his unique management style; it also discusses some of the battles he had with council and government.
The rebuilding of the school is fully chronicled and some of the key events of recent years are mentioned.
